At the end of the GRADUS Project (DG Employment and Social Affairs – Equal Opportunities), this conference intends to discuss the changes in civil society from a gender point of view. They will be discussed from the different perspectives of society, politics, and economics. In particular, the GRADUS project has explored the rise of new types of organizations of the civil society aimed at the public sphere (economics, politics and welfare) in areas such as second level institutions, entrepreneurial organizations, no profit organizations. Furthermore, the project has analysed the effects of these changes on women, and on their action within society.

Alternative models and approaches will be investigated in relation to the economic liberalist model and the profit related competition and competitiveness ideal, in the context of the changes between civil society and economics, and the importance of the “social reproduction” in today’s civil life.

2) Changes in civil society from the perspective of politics: what about women?
Discussant: Nadia Urbinati, Professor of Political Theory, Columbia University

The seminar aims to question whether both old and new civil life organizations, including the “mixed” organizations in between the public and the private sectors (the so called Second Level Institutions), can represent, nowadays, a model for democracy, consensus building and shared power, especially between sexes.

3)Changes in civil society from the perspective of social policies: what is the role of women?
Discussant: Valentina Longo, Dipartimento di sociologia, Università di Padova

Taking into consideration the privatization process at work in many areas of society nowadays, interesting approaches, and proposals will be investigated in order to reduce social inequality, and poverty, and to achieve social welfare and quality of life within both the work environment and the social services.
